Practical advice/support

The following organisations provide practical information, signposting and support for people experiencing ill health & disability.  Contact your local council for support delivered by social services, including safeguarding concerns, housing and care support.
  • Driving - Specific advice from government regarding driving with a medical condition
  • Blue Badge - Information on local council parking scheme for people who struggle to walk
  • Working - Support and advice from government about finding a job
  • Working with a disability - Advice from government about finding a job when disabled
  • Benefits - Information from government about benefits and making an application, e.g. Universal Credit. 
  • Carers UK - A resource for carers across the UK full of helpful advice and information about a range of topics associated with caring for someone with an illness or disability e.g. practical support, financial information, housing, etc.
  • Citizens Advice Bureau provides advice/information on a range of topics
  • MIND - The mental health charity
  • Disabled Living Foundation Is a national charity providing impartial advice, information and training on equipment for independent living
  • Ability Net - An organisation to help people make best use of assistive technology  
  • British & Irish Orthoptic Society Provides information and advice
  • Royal College of Occupational Therapists Provides advice on social distancing

Both Headway and The Stroke Association have also produced really helpful guides, which are relevant for people with different types of brain injury, so check out their websites

Some organisations have created brief information cards, jewellery or lanyards to enable people to indicate to others a ‘hidden disability or need’.  These include:

Third sector organisations in the UK have developed a lot of useful resources, and many of these have additional information about coronavirus.
